indefensible:

One hundred years ago, we weren’t using the internet/taking penicillin/tv/allowing women to vote/going to space/driving cars/injecting insulin/using specious arguments/whatever suits my point.

We weren’t evolved to do any of this crap.

Frankly, I suspect we weren’t evolved to live in New York. But people do it.

Exactly.

Though no one would ever think of using the term honor violence (we reserve that descriptor for brown people who live somewhere else, motivated by religious something-or-other or tribal something-or-other), one-third of women murdered every year in the United States are killed by their intimate partners. In 2005 that amounted to 1,181 women, or three women every day. To put that in perspective, the UN estimates there are 5,000 honor killings every year in the entire world. 5,000 in a world of 6 billion versus nearly 1,200 in a single country of 300 million. In other words, a woman in America runs a greater risk of being killed by her husband or boyfriend than a woman in Pakistan.

Let me reiterate that for you all …

A woman in America runs a greater risk of being killed by her husband or boyfriend than a woman in Pakistan.

I think you’ve missed a crutial point though, let me point it out:

A woman in America runs a greater risk of being killed by her husband or boyfriend than a woman in Pakistan.

I think that being repeated so many times is fantastic for Western fauxminists and “egalitarians” that think all issues here are “fixed” (or “reversed” so that men are oppressed) so now  we just need to go save the brown women in other countries.

My mother’s Venice tips
- We liked the Cannaregio Sestiere because of its ‘relative’ tranquility, no big masses of tourists here, wide quaisides, space to breathe, and proximity to about everything. Was nice to observe ‘real’ people here, kids going to school, office people hurrying to work,  the garbage boat coming by, the deliveries of flour and other stuff, etc
- We very much enjoyed stumbling onto the Alta Acqua Bookshop which surely must be one of the oddest bookshops in the world - it even has a gondola ( or two ) inside the shop, fully packed with books. There are books everywhere, rooms and rooms, some walls are made up of books, some seats are made up of books. Very, extremely messy shop, but truly an experience.
- We really did enjoy the concerts of Vivaldi by the Interpreti Veneziani, a group of young guys, who play Vivaldi with so much enthusiasm. The venue also was great, the Chiesa San Vidal
- We were lucky to stumble onto a ‘flea market’ in Venice on our last day, when I really wished I wasn’t restricted to my 10 kg of handluggage ( flying Ryanair ). The market ” Mercantino dei Miracoli “seems to be a yearly event on  the weekend of Mother’s Day and takes place at the Campo S Canciano, Campiello e Campo S Maria Nova
- And of course we also really liked the Museum Fortuny which was a truly unusual museum experience.
